How to choose a designer to work with

Choosing a designer to work with is a difficult task. Something like looking for the perfect wedding dress. You may have seen several designer websites, but you have the feeling that all of them are missing something. So how do choose a designer and avoid spending time searching for candidates on the internet?

You are looking for a person who knows how to reflect the essence of your business in an image, who understands you, and who falls within your budget. in this blog post, I will teach you How to choose a designer to work with easily on the internet.

The truth is that I find quite a few clients who come to me after having had ugly experiences with other designers. This generates in their distrust and fear of being wrong again. If you have been through something similar, you surely understand the feeling. Many times the initial error comes from the search for the impossible.

Let me tell you that in this profession there is no such thing as good, beautiful, and cheap.

In case you don’t believe me, let’s do the test below:

Good and cheap: it won’t be pretty for sure. If someone good makes you a price-driven website in record time, I assure you that there won’t be much design behind it.
Nice and cheap: beware that all that glitters is not gold. If they promise you a beautiful website for a very low budget, doubt the quality of the work they are going to do.

Good and pretty: it is never cheap. When someone serious and professional gives you a budget for a website with a design adapted to your needs, the price will not be cheap.

In general, it is easy to tend to choose the second option. Someone who promises you a nice design at a good price. What happens is that the magic usually lasts very little and then the problems and budget adjustments begin if you want this extra or this other.

If you are looking for that perfect person to work on your project and you do not finish telling yourself, keep reading because I will teach you how to find the perfect designer.

1. Look at their portfolio

The first thing you should do before contacting someone is to review their portfolio. By looking at the works that he has published, you can know his style and see if it fits with what you like.

As much as they recommend you to someone if after seeing their work there are none that you like, the best thing you can do is keep looking. You will save a lot of time and the other person too.

Imagine that you are a wedding planner and you want a website in pastel tones, with details of flowers and hearts. Some friends recommend a really cool and super nice designer. You enter his website and see that his portfolio is full of minimalist black and white designs. As much as they tell you how wonderful it is, it is still not the best option for you.

On the other hand, if you come across designers who do not have a portfolio published on their website, be suspicious. It is very normal not to have updated projects (life does not give for everything). Or have just a small selection of the latest work. But having nothing at all can only mean two things. That person has nothing to show for or is not proud of what they have done.

2. First contact

If you have already seen his portfolio and have fallen in love with his work, the next step is to get in touch. Try to follow the steps indicated on the web. You likely have a special form for design commissions, fill it out and wait for a response.

Do not try to write to him on social networks, or send him messages through other forms. I tell you from my own experience that it is best to follow the indicated path. Searching for shortcuts will not only not get you a faster response, but it can also make your message fall into oblivion.

After this first email contact, you should try to set a date to speak in person or on Skype. It is the best way to know if you are really going to work well with that person or not. This step is essential to determine if there is a good connection.

In my case, after reading the form, if I have a gap in the agenda and the project fits me, I always propose an interview via Skype to get to know each other. 95% of people are delighted with the idea but there is always a small percentage who seem upset that they have to see me get a quote. In those cases I let the project go by, I honestly cannot pass a budget to someone without knowing if we are going to understand each other by working together or the assignment is going to be hell.

3. Budget

We have reached the most delicate point. It is possible that after much searching you have found the person you were looking for but his rates are very high for you. What to do then?

As I see it, you have two options that will determine how to choose a designer:

A) Catch another person who is cheaper knowing that the result will not be so good. You will have a website to get out of trouble and if everything goes well, in a few months or a year you may have the money to invest in a higher budget Advantages: you can start your project immediately without delaying it any longer. Disadvantages: you will not be able to complain about the design, you already know in advance that it will not be a marvel. Also, in the end, you will be spending more money by having to invest twice in the same thing.

B) Wait a few months to launch your project. With some time you will be able to gather the money you need to face the project. Advantages: you will have the websites of your dreams from the launch of the project. Disadvantages: having to delay the project for a few months.

Of course, there is also option C, you have found a wonderful designer, with an incredible portfolio and the price seems great to you. So congratulations, sure that in a few months you will be succeeding on the internet with your project.
